Asal Usul Dewa Ares

Ares adalah dewa perang dalam mitologi Yunani. Ares sendiri merupakan anak dari Zeus dan Hera dan termasuk ked alam 12 dewa olimpus.

Dua pengawal utamanya adalah Fobos dan Deimos. Ares sendiri merupakan dewa yang haus darah dan merupakan perwujudan dari pembunuhan.

Asal Usul Dewa Ares

Ares berkuasa atas alat – alat perang, penyerangan, dan pertahanan kota, pemberontakan, penjarahan, kejantanan, serta keberanian.

Burung hering dan anjing adalah binatang keramat bagi Ares. Dalam lliad, ia muncul dengan dikelilingi oleh berbagai penjelmaan dari kengerian perang, namun dalam Odyssey karakternya agak sedikit melunak.

Ares juga terlibat dalam pendirian kota Thebes. Dalam mitologi Romawi, ia dikenal dengan nama dewa Mars. Nama Mars menjadi nama salah satu planet yang dekat dengan bumi dan memiliki 2 bulan yang dinamai berdasarkan nama pengawalnya, Phobos dan Deimos.

Nama bulan Maret merupakan persembahan baginya. Ares ditemukan muncul dalam lembaran tanah liat Linear B. Di Knossos, Kreta, namanya adalah AR-E tetapi di Pylos namanya dieja A-RE-JA.

Enyalios (E-NU-WA-RI-JO), nama yang juga ditemukan di Linear B di Knossos, kemungkinan adalah julukan bagi Ares atau personifikasi dari perang dan saudara laki-laki Enyo.

Ares adalah dewa dewa Olimpus yang penting dalam tradisi kuno seperti diceritakan dalam Iliad. Karakternya cukup ambigu, Ares disebutkan dalam suatu prasasti permakaman dari akhir abad ke-6 di Attika, di sana tertulis:

“Tinggallah dan berkabung di makam Kroisos/ yang telah dihancurkan oleh Ares yang mengamuk, dia bertempur di jajaran terdepan”.

Pada masa kuno, Nama “Ares” juga digunakan sebagai julukan untuk aspek perang dari dewa-dewa lain, misalnya Zeus Areios, Athena Areia, bahkan Aphrodite Areia.

Pada masa Mikene, ada sebuah prasasti yang menunjukkan tentang Enyalios, nama julukan bagi Ares.

Asal namanya berhubungan dengan bahasa Yunani ἀρή (are), pengembangan dari ἀρά (ara), “kutukan, kehancuran”.

Sedangkan nama Mars kemugkinan berhubungan dengan kata Yunani μάρναμαι (marnamai), “bertarung, bertempur” atau dengan bahasa Hindi atau Punjab maarna (membunuh).

Dalam mitologi Yunani, ada beberapa dewa yang melambangkan berbagai aspek dari peperangan, misalnya Athena yang melambangkan kebijaksanaan dan strategi perang, dan melindungi manusia serta tempat tinggalnya selama perang.

Sementara Ares, di pihak lain, merupakan simbol dari keberutalan, kekejaman, dan horor dari perang.

Athena dan Ares bermusuhan. Saudari Ares, Eris, memicu peperangan, Zeus mengarahkan jalannya perang, tetapi Ares mencintai perang untuk kesenangannya sendiri, dia menikmati hiruk-pikuk dan teriakan dalam perang, pembantaian manusia, dan penghancuran kota.

Dia bahkan tidak mengikuti semangat keberpihakan, dia kadang-kadang mendukung satu pihak lalu membantu pihak lainnya, dia hanya melakukannya sesuai kehendak hatinya.

Ares juga dianggap ikut berperan dalam kematian manusia yang disebabkan oleh wabah dan epidemi.

Sifat Ares yang haus darah dan liar ini membuat dia dibenci baik oleh orang tuanya maupun oleh dewa lain.

Di antara para dewa, Ares adalah yang paling tidak dipercaya. Dalam Iliad dikatakan: “Kau adalah dewa Olimpus yang paling membenciku,” Zeus berkata pada Ares, “Perselisihan, perang, dan pembantaian adalah hal yang kau sukai.

Tempat kelahiran sekaligus rumah Ares terletak di antara bangsa Trakia, bangsa barbar yang suka berperang. Ke sanalah dia pergi setelah perselingkuhannya dengan Afrodit terungkap.

Sebagai dewa perang, Ares malah sering kalah dalam pertarungan. Athena pernah beberapa kali mengalahkan Ares. Herakles dan Diomedes juga pernah melukai tubuh Ares. Selain itu, Ares juga pernah dikalahkan oleh Aloadai, sepasang raksasa.
